How to Set Up an MTProto Proxy

MTProto proxies help Telegram clients connect when direct access is unstable or filtered. This guide is a practical overview for beginners â not a bypass-anything promise, and not a substitute for following local laws.

What an MTProto proxy is
A Telegram-specific proxy that understands MTProto traffic. In the Telegram app you add a server, port, and secret. Official clients support this natively.

When people use it
  • Unreliable networks
  • Restricted environments where Telegram proxy settings help connectivity
  • Teams that need a known connection path for support scenarios

High-level setup options
Option A â Use a public proxy
Fastest: add a trusted proxy shared by a provider or community. Risk: trust and uptime vary. Prefer sources you know.

Option B â Run your own proxy
More control. Typical flow:
  • Get a VPS with a publib IP
  • Install a maintained MTProto proxy implementation
  • Generate a secret
  • Open the chosen port on the firewall
  • Add the proxy in Telegram and test

Adding a proxy in Telegram
Settings â Data and Storage â Proxy settings â Add Proxy â MTProto.
Enter server, port, and secret. Enable and check connection quality.

Operational tips
  • Keep software updated
  • Monitor uptime; have a backup proxy
  • Do not paste secrets in public chats
  • Rotate secrets if leaked
  • Document which team members use which endpoint

Security notes
A proxy can see connection metadata appropriate to its role. Run your own when trust matters. Avoid random proxies from spammy channels.

Troubleshooting
  • Wrong secret / port â connection fails
  • Firewall blocked â open TCP port
  • VPS IP reputationally blocked â try another network/IP
  • Works on Wi-Fi not mobile data â carrier path differences

Checklist
  • Proxy type = MTProto
  • Server + port + secret correct
  • Test from two networks
  • Backup proxy saved
